Nose: Cotton sheets, photocopy paper, blueberries, black tea, raisins, driftwood smoke, hints of malted grains. With water, peanuts, lohan fruit, coffee, blueberries.
Mouthfeel: Heavy body, loosens, tingly, hot.
Tasting:  Salty sweet. Sea salt, wheat beer, blueberries, malted grains, raisins, peanuts, driftwood smoke, hints of gooseberries. With water, black tea, driftwood smoke, blueberries, coffee.
Finish: Medium. Wheat beer, sea salt, black tea, blueberries.

Comments:

Cask OHD-94. Very fruity, lots of feinty and malty notes still break through the sherry cask influence. It’s also surprisingly smoky, lots of savoury umami as well. Highly complex, needs a bit more time in wood I’d say.

Verdict:

I like this.

Single malt - Tasmania
Dusty dark gold
50% ABV
Dram

Nose: Toffee, red grapes, roast chicken, black tea, chamomile, nutmeg, brown paper.
Mouthfeel: Heavy body, thickens, tingly, warm.
Tasting:  Sweet. Red grapes, raisins, toffee, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, golden syrup, brown paper.
Finish: Long. Toffee, black tea, raisins, chamomile.

Comments:

Sweet and meaty, with some herbal notes. I remember Overeem being sweet, but the complexity is welcome. Don’t often get to try stuff from this distillery, so this was very welcome.

Verdict:

I like this.

Overeem Batch 2

Overeem Batch 2

That Boutique-y Whisky Company, Master of Malt
Single malt - Tasmania
Dark gold
52.9% ABV
Dram

Nose: Malted grains, blackberry jam, orange marmalade, black tea, cinnamon, vanilla, hints of sea salt. With water, sea salt, vanilla, raisins, hints of honey.
Mouthfeel: Heavy body, thickens, astringent, tingly.
Tasting:  Bitter sweet. Black tea, blackberry jam, vanilla, honey, fondant icing, hints of cinnamon. With water, more bitter, sea salt, honey, raisins.
Finish: Medium. Honey, vanilla, toast, hints of sea salt.

Comments:

Quite fruity, clearly a wine cask or sherry cask finish. Something very sweet, yet tannic, on the tongue. Doesn't take a lot of water to open it up, and it becomes salty, and more bitter.

Verdict:

I like this.

Old Hobart Overeem Sherry Cask Matured (OHD-95)

Old Hobart Overeem Sherry Cask Matured (OHD-95)

Official bottling
Single malt - Tasmania
Light amber
43% ABV
Dram

Nose: Red grapes, blueberries, orange peel, damson jam, hints of sandalwood.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, static, slippery, mouth coating.
Tasting:  Sweet. Black tea, blueberries, red grapes, damson jam, honey.
Finish: Medium. Black tea, honey, damson jam, hints of sandalwood.

Comments:

Decent sherried whisky, but it's a bit one-dimensional. There's not much difference between the nose, taste and finish, it's all jammy, fruity, grapey sweet notes. Maybe it needs a bit more maturing.

Verdict:

Not bad.

Old Hobart Overeem Port Matured (Cask Strength)

Single malt - Tasmania
Rose wine
60% ABV
Dram

Nose: Oak, raisins, black tea, plums, hints of smoked bacon. With water, vanilla, clotted cream, raspberries.
Mouthfeel: Light body, thickens, tingly, astringent.
Tasting:  Sweet. Black tea, raisins, vanilla, clotted cream, red grapes, raspberries. With water, sweet salty, red grapes, salted caramel.
Finish: Long. Black tea, raisins, toast, clotted cream.

Comments:

Cask OHD-21. Young, doesn't seem to have spent a lot of time in the port pipe. I say this because it's got a savoury edge to it, and, if you add water, that savoury edge is much more obvious. It's not a bad whisky, but I think with more aging it could have been much better.

Verdict:

Not bad.

Old Hobart Overeem Bourbon Cask Matured (Cask Strength OHD-065)

Old Hobart Overeem Bourbon Cask Matured (Cask Strength OHD-065)

Official bottling
Single malt - Tasmania
Dark gold
60% ABV
Dram

Nose: Malted grains, raisins, salt caramel, orange peel, lemon zest, hints of vanilla. With water, toasted coconut, cream.
Mouthfeel: Light body, slippery, tingly, mouth coating.
Tasting:  Sweet sour. Black tea, vanilla, toast, raisins, lemon zest, hints of cream. With water, more savoury, sea salt, toasted coconut.
Finish: Long. Black tea, cream, orange peel, toast.

Comments:

Oddly named ('cask strength' is redundant, perhaps?), but I like the information on the provenance. It's decent whisky, but not stand-out. Takes a lot of water - I added perhaps twice what I normally do, and the flavours didn't open up a great deal until I'd drenched it. But they are good flavours, there's something salty and more-ish hiding under all that alcohol.

Verdict:

I like this.
