Anohka This Is Not Whisky
Official bottling
Single malt - Alberta
Very pale gold
57.2% ABV
Dram
Nose: Smoke, peat, lemon juice, lime zest, honey, marmalade, hints of diesel exhaust. With water, lime zest, lemon juice, smoke, cucumbers.
Mouthfeel: Light body, volatile, hot, tingly.
Tasting: Sour salty. Lime zest, marmalade, smoke, peat, grapefruit, photocopy paper, sea salt, smoke, peat. With water, sea salt, lime zest, hints of roast chicken.
Finish: Long. Autumn leaves, peat, smoke, lime zest, grapefruit.
Comments:
Tried this on a whim, very positively surprised. It’s rather like a very youthful Ardnahoe, definitely the same style of whisky. Peaty, smoky and citrusy, grapefruit and limes forever.
Verdict:
I like this a lot.

Whistlepig 10yo Straight Rye
Whistlepig 10yo Straight Rye
Whistlepig Farm
Single rye - Alberta
Amber red
50% ABV
Dram
Nose: Strawberries, bananas, vanilla, cinnamon, plums.
Mouthfeel: Light body, tingly, loosens, turns watery.
Tasting: Sweet sour. Plums, cream, cinnamon, limes, nutmeg, hints of bananas.
Finish: Long. Cinnamon, chillies, nutmeg, red grapes, broccoli.
Comments:
Spirit from Alberta Distillers, matured in Vermont, but for me, it's the spirit that determines terroir... so let's call this one Canadian. Really good rye whiskey, intensely spicy and fruity. A palate explosion. Very nice indeed.
Verdict:
I like this a lot.

Alberta Rye Dark Batch
Alberta Rye Dark Batch
Official bottling
Single rye - Alberta
Amber, tinge of purple
45% ABV
Dram
Nose: Red grapes, toffee, cinnamon, lohan fruit, charcoal, cotton candy.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, slippery, cool, loosens.
Tasting: Sweet. Red grapes, lohan fruit, charcoal, prunes, black tea, hints of cotton candy.
Finish: Medium. Vanilla, red grapes, black tea, leather, prunes.
Comments:
OK, Canadian whiskey is weird. This is rye spirit distilled at Alberta Distillers in Calgary, but it's adulterated with some bourbon and a little sherry. But it's still 91% single rye, honest. It's fruity and dark, with a cooked, slightly charred note that I interpret as the herbal lohan fruit soup I used to get as a child. Nice stuff.
Verdict:
I like this.
