Spirit Hound Straight Malt Whiskey 2yo (bottled 2021)

Official bottling
Single malt - Colorado
Dark yellow gold
45% ABV
Dram

Nose: Peaches, cloves, pineapples, cinnamon, honey, rye bread, red grapes, hints of bubble gum.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, loosens, airy, cool.
Tasting:  Sweet. Pineapples, sarsaparilla, cinnamon, honey, red grapes, peaches, cloves, black pepper, clay dust.
Finish: Short. Peaches, black pepper, bubble gum, sarsaparilla, clay dust.

Comments:

Cask 35. This is really good young whiskey, lots of fruity peach notes, with spicy, deep herbal sweetness, and a little bit of black pepper on the edge of the tongue. It also has a dusty, slightly bitter taste, which I tend to associate with age. Delicious stuff.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

The Legendary Dark Silkie Cask Strength

The Legendary Dark Silkie Cask Strength

Comments:

Batch 1/20. Highly sherried, extremely alcoholic blended whisky, distilled on contract by Great Northern. It’s spicy and meaty, heaping with chocolate and strawberry. Utterly delicious.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Finish: Long. Fresh baked bread, vanilla sponge, raisins, cinnamon, figs.

Comments:

Cask 66. Hugely complex and jammy, even if it’s only 3 years old.  Lots of fruity estery notes, over a big bold cereally core. Water brings our further notes of cereal and bubble gum (pleasant in this case).

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Waterford Peated Ballybannon 1.1

Waterford Peated Ballybannon 1.1

Tasting:  Bitter sweet. Apple juice, farmyard, blue cheese, peat, dunnage, caramel, smoke, fresh baked bread.
Finish: Short. Dark chocolate, dunnage, apple juice, peat, smoke.

Comments:

Peated Waterford is new in my experience. It’s rather funky and farmyardy, with a good sweet core of apple juice and dunnage. The smoke is gentle and restrained.

Verdict:

I like this.

Lagg Corriecravie

Lagg Corriecravie

Finish: Long. Black tea, menthol, camphor, persimmons, raisins.

Comments:

Oily, peaty, chemical whisky, and I love it. It’s got an underlying sweetness, and water opens it up, turning it earthy and fruity. Really good young whisky.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Glenturret 10yo Peat Smoked 2023

Glenturret 10yo Peat Smoked 2023

Amber
48.4% ABV
Dram

Nose: Smoke, peat, leather, roast beef, damson jam, honey, malted grains, pencil lead, black pepper.

Tasting:  Bitter sweet. Smoke, peat, leather, mint, orange peel, damson jam, malted grains, pencil lead, vanilla, hints of black pepper.
Finish: Medium. Brown paper, black pepper, leather, orange peel.

Comments:

Technically this is Ruadh Mor, but it’s an OB peated Glenturret. There’s plenty of jammy orange peel, but there’s a feinty, slightly sulphurous note of pencil leaned lifts this dram and keeps it interesting.

Verdict:

I like this.

Teaninich 2010 Firkin Rare

Teaninich 2010 Firkin Rare

Finish: Long. Black tea, cinnamon, fresh baked bread, brown paper.

Comments:

Cask SC65. Highly sherried, lots of very jammy things, and some bready cereal and cinnamon. It’s not got very much distillery character anymore, but it’s rather good.

Verdict:

I like this.

Finish: Short. Cocoa nibs, acacia honey, raisins, damson jam.

Comments:

Sweet and juicy, but with a salty, funky farmyard note. Lots of chocolate and honey predominate, but the savoury notes underpinning them are unmistakeable. Very interesting, unbalanced and quite delicious.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Young, peppery, slightly plasticky, but there’s a deep sweetness somewhere that complements the peat and smoke. Decent and interesting dram.

Debt Collector Moonshine 1yo

Debt Collector Moonshine 1yo

Nose: Cream, raisins, orange peel, burnt sugar, cinnamon, strawberry jam.
Mouthfeel: Light body, expanss, tingly, cool.
Tasting:  Sweet. Strawberry jam, malted grains, caramel, cream, raisins, orange peel.
Finish: Short. Brown paper, burnt sugar, orange peel, raisins.

Comments:

Not sure about this - I get that distilleries need cash flow and release stuff that’s not quite whisky, but this is decidedly odd. It’s jammy and sweet, but there’s an unbalanced, artificial note. It’s ok.

Verdict:

I like this.

Mortlach 13yo Special Releases 2021

Mortlach 13yo Special Releases 2021

Finish: Short. Malted grains, coffee, photocopy paper, thyme, lemon juice.

Comments:

Very fruity Mortlach, I must say the meatiness is not much in evidence. It’s rather herbal, lots of fragrant thyme notes, and water opens it up and brings out a briny, slightly raisiny note. Delicious.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Fielden Rye Whisky

Fielden Rye Whisky

Official bottling
Single rye - Oxfordshire
Amber gold
48% ABV
Dram

Nose: Orange peel, sandalwood, black pepper, rye bread, magic marker, hints of chillies.

Tasting:  Sweet salty. Black pepper, cream, vanilla, sandalwood, magic marker, brown paper, hints of sea salt.
Finish: Short. Black pepper, brown paper, vanilla, cream, rye bread.

Comments:

They’ve now relocated the Oxford Artisan distillery to Yorkshire, so it’s a closed distillery and these are stocks from it while the new distillery gets up and running. It’s chewy and heavy rye, lots of fruit and spice. It’s decent.

Verdict:

I like this.

Finish: Medium. Malted grains, key lime pie, cotton sheets, wet stones.

Comments:

This Belgian distillery has some of the old Caperdonich stills, and produces something very akin to Caperdonich, only its young. Floral, peppery and delicate. Very lovely stuff.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Echlinville 7yo The Beginning

Echlinville 7yo The Beginning

Tasting:  Sweet salty. Malted grains, photocopy paper, limes, pears, white grapes, white pepper, hints of honey. With water, brown paper, pencil lead, malted grains, honey.
Finish: Medium. Coffee, limes, malted grains, honey.

Comments:

New whisky from the distillery owned by the company that owns the Dunville brand. It’s distinctive - malty, floral, citrusy, and with a feinty edge that is especially apparent with some water. There’s a faint papery note that reminds me of bourbon.

Verdict:

I like this.

Convalmore 45yo 1975/2020

Convalmore 45yo 1975/2020

Private Collection, Gordon & Macphail
Single malt - Speyside
Dark gold
47.9% ABV
Dram

Nose: Malted grains, lemon zest, winter melon, nectarines, mint, apricot jam, hints of camphor, hints of cream.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, loosens, warm, mouth coating.
Tasting:  Sweet sour. Apricot jam, honey, fresh baked bread, pears, celery salt, white pepper, malted grains, hints of cream.
Finish: Long. Malted grains, apricot jam, nectarines, celery salt, honey.

Comments:

Citrusy, malty and with plenty of stone fruit, it’s a real treat to taste this practically ancient whisky. It’s not overoaked though, lots of bright spice and some old bottle effect come through, even if it’s rather young in the bottle to have developed it.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Convalmore 24yo 1978/2003 Rare Malts

Convalmore 24yo 1978/2003 Rare Malts

Finish: Long. Honey, nectarines, camphor, clay dust, ink.

Comments:

I’ve been chasing this one for a long time. One of the very best Convalmores I’ve ever had. It’s minerally and fruity, with layers of flavour that open up wonderfully with a little water. But it doesn’t take that much water, just a drop or two. .

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Finish: Medium. Sourdough bread, black pepper, damson jam, cocoa nibs.

Comments:

Jammy and cereally, lots of sharp spicy rye wreaths a heavy, chewy whisky. There’s a sulphurous note that lingers a little on the tongue, and it’s more than a little funky. Interesting dram.

Verdict:

I like this.

Coleburn 17yo 1978/1995

Authentic Collection, WM Cadenhead
Single malt - Speyside

Nose: Cotton sheets, cola nuts, malted grains, damson jam, white peaches, sultanas, white pepper. With water, malted grains, mint, camphor, damson jam.

Finish: Long. Balsamic vinegar, white pepper, sultanas, dark chocolate, hints of damson jam.

Comments:

Rather sweet and fruity at first, then it falls apart into sour savoury notes, caramelised onions in balsamic vinegar. It’s almost a rancio note, very interesting old bottle effect. It’s a long, sweet sour lingering feel on the tongue and on the finish.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

I like this a lot.

Tasting:  Bitter sweet. Brass polish, dark chocolate, cinnamon, orange peel, damson jam, tarragon, hints of cream.
Finish: Medium. Orange peel, damson jam, vanilla, cinnamon.

Comments:

This Geery is sweet and chocolatey, with some feinty edges and a nice tarragon note on the tongue. No water for this one, it’s right on the edge for me, and is very skippable.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Finish: Long. Palm sugar, damson jam, blueberry jam, cloves, blackcurrant cordial, hints of mustard.

Comments:

Amazing old Glen Garioch. It’s sweet and sherried, but with water, some more burnt sweet notes appear, and a herbal edge which I think is a characteristic of Geery. Lovely whisky, this.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Tasting:  Bitter sour. Rye bread, black pepper, new plastic, brass polish, vitamin C tablets, lemon juice, hints of cream, hints of sea salt.
Finish: Short. Cream, rye bread, lemon juice, black pepper, sea salt.

Comments:

Pure rye, very bitter whisky. But the bitterness covers a lot of citrus notes, and there’s a hint of cream and sea salt. Unusual, but very drinkable. Different stuff to scotch for sure.

Verdict:

I like this.

Tasting:  Bitter. Rye bread, molasses, black pepper, new plastic, smoke, leather, brass polish.
Finish: Medium. Hoppy beer, fresh cut grass, oatcakes, coffee, smoke.

Comments:

This must be almost all rye, with very little barley in it. It’s bitter and pungent, with the rye flavour predominating. There’s a fair amount of smoke here too, quite unexpectedly.

Verdict:

I like this.

Tasting:  Sour sweet. Milk chocolate, honey, orange peel, blueberry jam, malted grains, coffee, hints of black pepper.
Finish: Medium. Coffee, black pepper, malted grains, passionfruit.

Comments:

Fruity, tart, but with a good milky cocoa sweetness. Why, it’s almost chocolatey. There’s also jam notes, and a bitter, fragrant note that’s reminiscent of coffee. It’s a good dram from a distillery that normally makes eau-de-vie.

Verdict:

I like this.

Tasting:  Sweet sour. Orange juice, fresh cut grass, vitamin C tablets, camphor, malted grains, cinnamon, parchment.
Finish: Medium. Parchment, camphor, orange juice, cinnamon.

Comments:

I like orange wine finished whisky, even if it’s orange-coloured wine rather than wine made with oranges, it’s still a little citrusy. This one has citrus, but also a slightly powdery tart note, like fizzy vitamin tablets.

Verdict:

I like this.

Comments:

Cask DL16341. A very savoury, yet delicate Talisker, with some sweet highlights. Nevertheless the first impression is bitter peat, covering some very delicate, almost floral flavours. Very impressive dram for its age.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Whisky from a shochu distillery and still. It’s sweet and light, tastes like liquid Bounty Bar, covered in blackberry jam. Beautifully delicate and intensely flavoured. Very good indeed.

Finish: Long. Brown paper, black tea, parchment, raisins, cocoa nibs.

Comments:

Well sherried blend, the components have been finished in the sherry casks, then blended. I’m more partial to blends that are finished in sherry casks for a bit. Sherry is so powerful that you might as well go the whole hog.

Verdict:

I like this.
