Cask 306085. Malty and sweet, with biscuity shortbread notes. There’s a little complexity here, but not too much. Probably needs a bit more aging. Decent dram, nevertheless.

Comments:

A very rum-like whisky. In fact, if you’d given this to me and not told me what it was, I’d have said that it’s rum. It’s sweet and you can taste sugar cane. It’s not hugely complex.

Comments:

Cask 2700. Fruity, slightly spicy, and a little dusty, this tastes old. Lots of stone fruit, and custard apples, which is a relative of the soursop. Some surprisingly waxy notes in the finish too.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Linkwood 42yo 1974/2017

Linkwood 42yo 1974/2017

Finish: Long. Candle wax, greengages, barley sugar, lilac, honeysuckle.

Comments:

Cask 8440 + 8441. It’s barely whisky and the angels have taken a lot. But it’s still fruity and spicy, if not quite as bright as younger Linkwoods. It’s a little too old, but still very, very good indeed.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Glenflagler 24yo 1972/1997

Finish: Medium. Kiwifruit, celery salt, lemon zest, hints of shoe polish.

Comments:

Cask 228444. Finally found another dram of this unicorn distillery. Lots of kiwifruit and melon, with some chemical bitterness (probably OBE). It’s nicer than it’s non-cask strength siblings. Complex and demanding dram.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Tasting:  Bitter sweet. Orange peel, malted grains, black tea, cloves, toffee, honey, nutmeg, hints of applesauce.
Finish: Long. Malted grains, black tea, raisins, toffee.

Comments:

Indeed, it’s a fine blend. Lots of fruit and spicy grains, the core of this is of course Lakes’ lovely single malt. But there’s Scotch in here too, particularly the gentle toffee’d grain. Quite delicious.

Verdict:

I like this.

Finish: Medium. Malted grains, burnt sugar, apple juice, cinder toffee, hints of charcoal ash.

Comments:

Cask 3090. Brilliant stuff, obviously spent some time in a plastic vessel, but for all that it’s still fruity and toffee’s, with a hint of crisp green apple and charcoal ash at the end to keep it interesting. Thank you Hopscotch Whisky Bar for this taste.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Finish: Long. Black pepper, red grapes, malted grains, raisins, fresh baked bread.

Comments:

A very brandy-like whisky, probably as a result of a good first fill cask and aging in a warmer environment. Very sweet and spicy, except for some maltiness on the finish I would have said this was brandy.

Verdict:

I like this.

Tasting:  Bitter. Leather, smoke, lemon sweets, peat, apples, butterscotch, raisins, yoghurt, hints of cocoa nibs.
Finish: Medium. Cocoa nibs, raisins, lemon sweets, smoke.

Comments:

Supposedly more peaty than the Supernova, but it’s still sweet and refreshing. The chocolate is less robust than other Ardbegs, becoming bitter cocoa, and there’s. a fair bit of lemon sweets.

Verdict:

I like this.

Finish: Long. Black tea, white wine, fresh baked bread, vanilla, golden syrup.

Comments:

Cask 7764 + 7765. Sweet and honeyed, but also spiced. The ABV is rather high, and it takes water very well. Good cask, I’m not sure I can taste the distillate so much.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.

Comments:

Tart, fruity, bitter and… plasticky? Not sure it was quite ready, but it’s certainly promising. Will have another dibble if there’s one released with an age statement in the future.

Cask 1728. An apple pie of a whisky, tangy and hot on the tongue, but with plenty of apply flavour and spice. The red wine finish is quite light, some tannins appear if you add water, but it’s gentle.

Verdict:

I like this.

Quite smoky, the Sherry cask influence seems to have been buried under a lot of peaty, herbal, medicinal flavours. There’s some raisins and cloves that make a brief appearance if you add some water.

Verdict:

I like this.

Tasting:  Bitter. Ginseng, charcoal ash, roasted chestnuts, smoke, fresh cut grass, new plastic, hints of white grapes.
Finish: Long. Ginseng, charcoal ash, smoke, honey, dried limes.

Comments:

Quite unbalanced, with some hints of plastic (which is possibly my least favourite tasting note), but the ashy bitterness makes up for it. Austrian whisky is different, of course.

Verdict:

I like this.

Veuve Goudoulin Single Malt (bottled 2019)

Veuve Goudoulin Single Malt (bottled 2019)

Mouthfeel: Light body, airy, tingly, loosens.
Tasting:  Sour sweet. Fresh cut grass, jasmine, green tea, white grapes, apricot jam, hints of orange blossom.
Finish: Medium. Sandalwood, peaches, white grapes, yogurt.

Comments:

Whisky from an Armagnac producer! It’s a little sweet, like overripe fruits, but there’s a lot of complexity in what must be quite a young whisky. I don’t think Veuve Goudoulin should stop making Armagnac, but they could make more whisky.

Verdict:

I like this.

Duvel Moortgat 10yo 2011/2021 The Celebration Bottle

Duvel Moortgat 10yo 2011/2021 The Celebration Bottle

Tasting:  Sweet salty. Malted grains, raisins, black pepper, nutmeg, brown paper, rye bread, hints of honey.
Finish: Long. Black pepper, strawberry jam, raisins, rye bread, nutmeg.

Comments:

Not strictly a whisky, this is distilled Duvel beer, so it contains hops. Nevertheless it’s great, pleasantly spicy, with some nutty, jammy notes to balance it out. I’d drink more of this stuff, but it’s quite rare.

Verdict:

I like this a lot.
